How should I prepare for my lip injections?
Here are a few things you can do to prep yourself for the best possible experience:
- Avoid alcohol: Steer clear of drinking alcohol or taking blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) 48 hours before your appointment, unless instructed by your doctor. These substances can increase your chances of bleeding and bruising.
- Take Arnica: Consider taking this natural supplement a day or 2 before and after your visit to aid the healing process.
- Arrive fresh faced: Come to your appointment without makeup on or be ready to remove any makeup on and around your lips.
- Plan ahead: Schedule your appointment for at least a couple of weeks before any big events — this will allow plenty of time for swelling and bruising to heal in time for you to look your best.
You’ll also want to do plenty of research on the practice and provider you’re considering to make sure they have all the necessary credentials to perform aesthetic injections. Visit DA’s™ Our Team page to learn all about our injectors or follow us on Instagram to see posts like the one below showing our patients’ experiences.
How much lip filler should I get?
Your injector will make recommendations for the amount you’ll need based on your goals. We find that most people require between .5 and 2 syringes of a hyaluronic acid filler such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® for lip injections at our Roseville, Sacramento, Folsom, and Elk Grove med spas. Different formulations offer different benefits related to their thickness, ability to absorb water, and other traits. Your injector will discuss these with you as well.
You can also enhance your lips by including a BOTOX® Cosmetic lip flip, which shapes your upper lip without adding extra volume. It was recently featured in Harper’s Bazaar as one of the fastest-growing trends in lip injections.
Do lip injections hurt?
Most fillers are formulated with lidocaine, a numbing agent designed to keep you as comfortable as possible. Your provider will also apply a topical anesthetic before performing the injections, which some people say feel like small pinches or bug bites. The whole process typically takes about 20 minutes.
How long will swelling last after lip injections?
Initial swelling typically lasts about 2 days, but it may take a couple of weeks for it to subside completely. Mild bruising and redness around your injection sites are also possible during the first few days. We recommend giving yourself a couple of weeks to heal completely before stepping out at any major event.

How long will my lip injection results last?
It depends on the formulation and how quickly your body naturally breaks it down, but most fillers last between 6 and 12 months. Because the volume goes down gradually over time, people typically opt for touch-ups once or twice a year to maintain their full, pouty look.
